Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks
1st Edition
by R Neil Sampson(Author), R. Dwight Atkinson(Author), Joe W. Lewis(Author)
Develop accurate computer models to determine wildfire risks and controlled-burn benefits! Although scientists now recognize that fire is essential to many ecosystems, the ecological and political issues of managing wildfire continue to be vexing. Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks offers multiple perspectives on using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for more effective wildfire management. This innovative technology is the ideal tool to organize and display all the information available, so authorities can make informed judgments based on all the facts. Because the authors are not merely theorizing but discussing the GIS they are actually building and using, Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks offers practical ideas and perspectives, including:
- specific information on the modeling approach and kinds of data utilized
- valuable discussions of the social and environmental factors included in the model
- techniques for predicting the effects of wildfire on neighborhoods, soil erosion, sedimentation, and air quality
- predictions of long-term ecosystem recovery given wildfires of different sizes and intensities
- maps, charts, tables, and formulas to make the process of building a GIS understandable and accessible
Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks is a compilation of the ideas of federal and state agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations on how to rank and prioritize forested watershed areas that are in need of prescribed fire. This book provides the essential information for deciding how to set priorities for wildfire management that might reduce risks or lower future damages.

Media Ethics and Disasters: Lessons from the Black Saturday Bushfires
Paperback – February 15, 2011
by Denis Muller (Author)
Journalists do not often get the chance to reflect on the ethical side of their work, and the public they serve knows little about it. What the public sees is often negative: intrusive cameras, shouted questions, rude and aggressive behaviour. But journalists tend to go from one story to the next with little time to think deeply about the impact their work has on the people they cover, or how their professional practices might be refined. Written in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Journalism at the University of Melbourne, Media Ethics and Disasters: Lessons from the Black Saturday Bushfires gives journalists the chance to reflect on the ethical issues that arose during coverage of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in February 2009, and by doing so to contribute to their professional education. It presents—mostly in their own words—what journalists said about how they responded to the many dilemmas that confronted them and provides insight into the reasons for their actions. For the public this is new territory. The book illustrates the range of ethical problems that journalists confronted at the fire ground. There were good decisions and bad decisions, and the 28 journalists interviewed for the book were remarkably frank about both. There are lessons too for the emergency services. The way they and the media interacted created many difficulties, and the research here shows there is still much to learn about management of the media at disaster scenes.

Megafire: The Race to Extinguish a Deadly Epidemic of Flame
Hardcover – Illustrated, August 22, 2017
by Michael Kodas(Author)
As forest fires continue to ravage communities, this bestselling author and firefighter explores what causes them, and captures the danger and heroism of those who fight them In Megafire, a world-renowned journalist and forest fire expert travels to the most dangerous and remote wildernesses, as well as to the backyards of people faced with these environmental disasters, to look at the heart of this phenomenon and witness firsthand the heroic efforts of the firefighters and scientists racing against time to stop it—or at least to tame these deadly flames. From Colorado to California, China to Canada, the narrative hopscotches the globe and takes readers to the frontlines of the battle both on the ground and in the air, and in the laboratories, universities, and federal agencies where this issue rages on. Through this prism of perspectives, Kodas zeroes in on a handful of the most terrifying and tumultuous of these environmental disasters in recent years—the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona that took the lives of nineteen elite “hotshot” firefighters, the Waldo Canyon Fire that overwhelmed the city of Colorado Springs—and more in a page-turning narrative that puts a face on the brave people at the heart of this issue. Megafire describes the profound impact of these fires around the earth and will change the way we think about the environment and the essential precariousness of our world.

Michigan on Fire
Paperback – June 20, 1997
by Betty Sodders (Author), Don Weeks (Editor)
More devastating than the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the forest fires that swept from shore-to-shore across Michigan in that year and again ten years later left hundreds dead, tens of thousands homeless, and millions of acres burned. Michigan on Fire is meticulously researched and sensitively told. It details miraculous stories of survival and tragic tales of mass killing by relentless flames. This comprehensive chronicle of Michigan forest fires from 1871 through 1974 includes chapters devoted to the history of firefighting equipment in Michigan, the role played by rescue ships and trains, and the relief work performed by the American Red Cross during the Thumb fires - the organization's first domestic disaster test. The Great Fires of 1871, Thumb Fires of 1881, Upper Peninsula Fires, the Metz Fire of 1908 and the AuSable-Oscoda Fire of 1911 are all covered in Michigan on Fire. Never before have all early Michigan forest fires been documented between the covers of just one volume. From start to finish, Michigan on Fire is hard to put down.

Mimicking Nature's Fire: Restoring Fire-Prone Forests In The West
Illustrated Edition, Kindle Edition
by Stephen F. Arno (Author), Carl E. Fiedler (Author) Format: Kindle Edition
The magnificent stands of old-growth trees that characterize the forests of western North America depend on periodic fires for their creation or survival. Deprived of that essential disturbance process eventually they die, leaving an overcrowded growth of smaller trees vulnerable to intense blazes and epidemics of insects and disease. In Mimicking Nature's Fire, forest ecologists Stephen Arno and Carl Fiedler present practical solutions to the pervasive problem of deteriorating forest conditions in western North America. Advocating a new direction in forest management, they explore the promise of "restoration forestry" -- an ecologically based approach that seeks to establish forest structures in which fire can once again serve as a beneficial process rather than as a destructive aberration. The book begins with an overview of fundamentals: why traditional forestry tried to exclude fire from forests, why that attempt failed, and why foresters and ecologists now recognize the need for management based on how natural ecosystems operate. Subsequent chapters consider: how fire's historic role provides a foundation for designing restoration strategies; why a hands-off approach will not return forests to their historical condition; how management goals influence the strategies used in restoration forestry. The second part of the book presents case studies of restoration projects in the western United States and Canada, representing different forest types, different historic fire regimes, and contrasting management goals. For each project, the authors describe why and how the project is being conducted, profile forest conditions, and describe methods of treatment. They also report what has been accomplished, identify obstacles to restoration, and offer their candid but understanding evaluation. Mimicking Nature's Fire concludes by placing restoration forestry in the broad context of conserving forests worldwide and outlining factors critical for its success.Illustrated Edition, Kindle Edition

Paperback – September 1, 2019
by Curt Brown (Author)
In 1918, Minnesota and its residents were confronted with a series of devastating events that put communities to the test, forcing them to persevere through untold hardship. First, as the nation immersed itself in the global conflict later known as World War I, some 118,000 Minnesotans served in the war effort, both at home and "over there"–and citizens on the home front were subjected to loyalty tests and new depths of government surveillance. While more than 1,400 Minnesotans were killed on the battlefields, an additional 2,300 soldiers were struck down by another destructive force working its way across the globe in 1918: the influenza pandemic, which left more than 10,000 dead in Minnesota alone. Then, in mid-October, fires raged across 1,500 square miles in seven counties of northeastern Minnesota, leaving thousands homeless and hundreds dead. In Minnesota, 1918, journalist and author Curt Brown explores this monumental year through individual and community stories from all over the state, from residents of small towns up north obliterated by the fire, to government officials in metropolitan centers faced with the spread of a deadly and highly contagious disease, to soldiers returning home to all this from the "war to end all wars."

Mixed models and point processes: Statistical models for the prediction and prevention of wildfires
Paperback – November 21, 2014
by Laura Serra Saurina (Author) This book presents different methodologies to model the occurrence of wildfires and evaluate how they are distributed in space and time. All the methods developed in this work are included in the theory of point processes and, in particular, they belong to the theory of point processes with marks. The book is structured in three main parts. First, there is an initial chapter where the theory on fires is introduced. Then, the second chapter describes the methodology used. Finally, the results are exposed in the third chapter. The methodology used through this book have been applied to the wildfires occurred in Catalonia during the period 1994-2011. The results may be useful in fire management decision-making and planning and so, may contribute to the prediction and prevention of wildfires.Paperback – November 21, 2014

Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Forest Fires II
Hardcover – May 1, 2010
by G. Perona (Author) This book contains peer-reviewed papers presented at the Second International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Forest Fires. Organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology, UK, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, the conference was.held in Kos, Greece, in June, 2010. The papers cover important topics in the field of prevention and fighting of forest fires.Forest fire scenarios are impacted by climatic trends and changes in climatic extremes, as well as by human pressure on the natural environment. Forecasting the effects of both climatic and anthropic factors and separating their effects on forest fire frequency may be particularly difficult, but it is essential to improve our knowledge of the probability of forest fire occurrence and to better organize prevention and fighting activities. Considering the many fire-prone environments around the world and the meteorological parameters known to affect fire risk, the ability to estimate the probability of fire will be increasingly important in coming years. The papers from the conference will contribute to greater understanding of all these factors, so that we can prevent, monitor, and better manage forest firesHardcover – May 1, 2010

Monitoring Forest Fires From Space: Neural Network Approach
Paperback – December 6, 2013
by Kamal R. AL-Rawi (Author)
Forests represent the lung of our planet. Wildfires constitute one of the major problems facing the forest ecosystem in the world. In the last decades number of forest fires has been increased due to the increasing in the human activities and climate change. Fast alarm for forest fires is very crucial issue to prevent their spread. In this book we employed satellite images together with artificial neural networks to build a very fast alarm system for forest fire detection. The satellite NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration / Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) images are used here. The TAGged Adaptive Resonance Theory ART-TAG Artificial Neural Network ANN is employed. ART-TAG is a supervised form for Compact Fuzzy ART. Burned Area Mapping System (BAMS) and Fire Detection System (FDS) have been built. Integrated Fire Evolution Monitoring System (IFEMS) has been constructed by integrating BAMS and FDS. IFEMS has the ability to distinguish burned area, area in active fire, and area beneath flames. Moreover, it has the ability to detect Fires that occur between two consecutive images and tracing sub pixel fires as well.

Montana's Waldron Creek Fire : The 1931 Tragedy and the Forgotten Five (Disaster)
Paperback – November 2, 2015
by Dr. Charles Palmer (Author)
On August 25, 1931, five men died fighting the devastating Waldron Creek Fire west of Choteau, Montana. Lacking training and preparation, Herbert Novotny, Frank Williamson, Hjalmer G. Gunnarson, Ted Bierchen and Charles Allen dashed into the flames and never stood a chance. The Teton County coroner added insult to injury, noting that each had "no one to blame but himself." Three men were buried in unmarked graves. Records show that the body of the fifth was returned to his family, but no burial site is known. Only one has a headstone. National Smokejumper Association chief historian Dr. Charles Palmer shines a light on this important story, finally honoring the heroic sacrifice that led to critical changes in wildland firefighting.

National Wildland Fire Management Strategy (Wildlife Protection, Destruction and Extinction: Environmental Remediation Technologies, Regulations and Safety)
UK ed. Edition
by Evan D. Hinkle (Editor), Michael J. Welsh (Editor)
The challenges of fire management are formidable and growing more complex. The Nation has diverse landscapes, demographics, and social values; and because of this, a national strategy must address these differences. This book addresses the wildland fire management challenges across America with a focus on providing the framework for a strategic effort to restore and maintain resilient landscapes, create fire-adapted communities, and respond to wildfires. Additionally, this book examines the general science available for a risk-based approach to fire and fuels management and suggests analysis that may be applied at multiple scales to inform decision-making and trade-off analysis.

Natural Disasters
1st Edition
by David C. Alexander (Author)
As a well balanced and fully illustrated introductory text, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the physical, technological and social components of natural disaster. The main disaster-producing agents are reviewed systematically in terms of geophysical processes and effects, monitoring, mitigation and warning. The relationship between disasters and society is examined with respect to a wide variety of themes, including damage assessment and prevention, hazard mapping, emergency preparedness, the provision of shelter and the nature of reconstruction. Medical emergencies and the epidemiology of disasters are described, and refugee management and aid to the Third World are discussed. A chapter is devoted to the sociology, psychology, economics and history of disasters.; In many parts of the world the toll of death, injury, damage and deprivation caused by natural disasters is becoming increasingly serious. Major earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, droughts, floods and other similar catastrophes are often followed by large relief operations characterized by substantial involvement of the international community. The years 1990-2000 have therefore been designated by the United Nations as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.; The book goes beyond mere description and elevates the field of natural catastrophes to a serious academic level. The author's insights and perspectives are also informed by his practical experience of being a disaster victim and survivor, and hence the unique perspective of a participant observer. Only by surmounting the boundaries between disciplines can natural catastrophe be understood and mitigation efforts made effective. Thus, this book is perhaps the first completely interdisciplinary, fully comprehensive survey of natural hazards and disasters. It has a clear theoretical basis and it recognizes the importance of six fundamental approaches to the field, which it blends carefully in the text in order to avoid the p

Natural disturbances and historic range of variation
1st ed. 2016 Edition
by Cathryn H. Greenberg (Editor), Beverly S. Collins (Editor)
This book discusses the historic range of variation (HRV) in the types, frequencies, severities and scales of natural disturbances, and explores how they create heterogeneous structure within upland hardwood forests of the Central Hardwood Region (CHR). The book was written in response to a 2012 forest planning rule which requires that national forests to be managed to sustain ‘ecological integrity’ and within the ‘natural range of variation’ of natural disturbances and vegetation structure. Synthesizing information on HRV of natural disturbance types, and their impacts on forest structure, has been identified as a top need.
