Cells, Molecules and Temperature: Conformational Flexibility of Macromolecules and Ecological Adaptation

0 Reviews
$126.18

by Vladimir Ya. Alexandrov (Author), V.A. Bernstam (Translator)

(Ecological Studies, 21) Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1977 Edition

After the great achievements in the field of molecular foundations of genetics and protein synthesis, molecular biology undertook the successful deciphering of a number of other important biological problems. By this time ecology in its various branches was far enough advanced to tackle the problems arising at the level of molecular biology. The monograph of Professor Alexandrov, which takes as an example the adaptation of organisms to habitat temperatures, presents a vivid picture of this major ecological problem as viewed at the cellular and molecular levels. As main theme of the book the author advances a hypothesis on a correlation between the level of conformational flexibility of protein molecules and the temperature ecology of a species, as a result of which the protein molecules are maintained in a semilabile state. This principle may also be applied to other factors of the environment which affect the level of flexibility of protein macro molecules. The principle of semistability is shown to be applicable also to the nucleic and fatty acids.

5th Edition

by Irvin Glassman (Author), Richard A. Yetter (Author), Nick G. Glumac (Author) Throughout its previous four editions, Combustion has made a very complex subject both enjoyable and understandable to its student readers and a pleasure for instructors to teach. With its clearly articulated physical and chemical processes of flame combustion and smooth, logical transitions to engineering applications, this new edition continues that tradition. Greatly expanded end-of-chapter problem sets and new areas of combustion engineering applications make it even easier for students to grasp the significance of combustion to a wide range of engineering practice, from transportation to energy generation to environmental impacts. Combustion engineering is the study of rapid energy and mass transfer usually through the common physical phenomena of flame oxidation. It covers the physics and chemistry of this process and the engineering applications―including power generation in internal combustion automobile engines and gas turbine engines. Renewed concerns about energy efficiency and fuel costs, along with continued concerns over toxic and particulate emissions, make this a crucial area of engineering

(Project Vesta, Interim edn) Kindle Edition

by JS Gould (Author, Editor), WL McCaw (Author, Editor), NP Cheney (Author, Editor), & 2 more Format: Kindle Edition
An effective response to bushfires relies on accurate predictions of fire behaviour, particularly the rate of spread, intensity and ‘spotting’. This field guide has been developed to provide a systematic method for assessing fuel hazard and predicting potential fire behaviour in dry eucalypt forest. It will assist in making vital decisions that ensure the protection of fire crews and the community. This guide integrates Project Vesta research findings with the Victorian Overall Fuel Hazard Guide and is applicable to dry eucalypt forests throughout southern Australia. Fuel assessment is based on the hazard scoring system employed during Project Vesta which investigated the effects of fuel age and understorey vegetation structure on fire behaviour in these forests. Information provided in this guide can be used to: Define and identify different fuel layers and components of fuel structure and hazard; Determine the hazard score of surface and near-surface fuel layers and the height of the near-surface fuel for fire spread prediction; Determine elevated fuel height for flame height prediction; and determine surface fuel hazard score and bark hazard score for spotting distance prediction. The Field Guide provides tables to predict the potential rate of spread of a bushfire burning in dry eucalypt forest under summer conditions, and can also be used to predict flame height and maximum spotting distance. The guide also allows users to determine the moisture content of fine dead fuels throughout the day, and to account for the effect of slope on the rate of spread of a fire.

Forest Fires: Behavior and Ecological Effects

0 Reviews
$85.40

1st Edition

by Edward A. Johnson (Editor), Kiyoko Miyanishi (Series Editor) Even before the myth of Prometheus, fire played a crucial ecological role around the world. Numerous plant communities depend on fire to generate species diversity in both time and space. Without fire such ecosystems would become sterile monocultures. Recent efforts to prohibit fire in fire dependent communities have contributed to more intense and more damaging fires. For these reasons, foresters, ecologists, land managers, geographers, and environmental scientists are interested in the behavior and ecological effects of fires. This book will be the first to focus on the chemistry and physics of fire as it relates to the ways in which fire behaves and the impacts it has on ecosystem function. Leading international contributors have been recruited by the editors to prepare a didactic text/reference that will appeal to both advanced students and practicing professionals.

The book is structured in three main parts. First, there is an initial chapter where the theory on fires is introduced. Then, the second chapter describes the methodology used. Finally, the results are exposed in the third chapter. The methodology used through this book have been applied to the wildfires occurred in Catalonia during the period 1994-2011. The results may be useful in fire management decision-making and planning and so, may contribute to the prediction and prevention of wildfires.

$92.80

Hardcover – May 1, 2010

by G. Perona (Author) This book contains peer-reviewed papers presented at the Second International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Forest Fires. Organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology, UK, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, the conference was.held in Kos, Greece, in June, 2010. The papers cover important topics in the field of prevention and fighting of forest fires.Forest fire scenarios are impacted by climatic trends and changes in climatic extremes, as well as by human pressure on the natural environment. Forecasting the effects of both climatic and anthropic factors and separating their effects on forest fire frequency may be particularly difficult, but it is essential to improve our knowledge of the probability of forest fire occurrence and to better organize prevention and fighting activities. Considering the many fire-prone environments around the world and the meteorological parameters known to affect fire risk, the ability to estimate the probability of fire will be increasingly important in coming years. The papers from the conference will contribute to greater understanding of all these factors, so that we can prevent, monitor, and better manage forest fires

Hardcover – December 3, 2004

by Larry W. Schwarm (Author) Inaugural Winner The Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography   A startling, mesmerizing series of photographs of prairie fires, On Fire transports us from moments of almost apocalyptic splendor to the stillness of near abstraction. For over a decade Kansas-based photographer Larry Schwarm has been making extraordinary color photographs of the dramatic prairie fires that sweep across the vast grasslands of his native state each spring. Based on this stunning and extensive body of work, Schwarm was chosen from over 500 submissions as the inaugural winner of the CDS/Honickman Foundation First Book Prize in Photography. With publication of On Fire, Duke University Press, in association with the Center for Documentary Studies and The Honickman Foundation, launches this major biennial book prize for American photographers. Fire is an essential element of the ecosystem. Every spring, the expanses of tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of east-central Kansas undergo controlled burning. For photographer Larry Schwarm, documenting these fires has become a passion. He captures the essence of the fires and their distinct personalities—ranging from calm and lyrical to angry and raging. His photos allow us to see the redemptive power of fire and to remove ourselves from its tragic elements. Through Schwarm’s lens, the horizon takes on new meaning as we view the sublime, mystical, and sensual character of the burning landscape. Schwarm connects the enormous power and devastation of fire to what can only be identified as another kind of creation—the creation of beauty. Published by Duke University Press in association with Lyndhurst Books of the Center for Documentary Studies To view images from the book, please visit http://cds.aas.duke.edu/books/fire.html The Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is open to American photographers who use their cameras for creative exploration, whether it be of places, people, or communities; of the natural or social world; of beauty at large or the lack of it; of objective or subjective realities. Wildfire Modeling: Firebrands and Contiguous Fire Spread

by Eunmo Koo (Author) Wildfires are complex phenomenon. To understand their spread mechanisms, physics based wildfire models are developed here. Discontinuous fire spread, i.e., spotting, is studied through a review of historical wind-driven and post-earthquake fires. Transport of various shapes of combusting firebrands is modeled using momentum balance on the firebrand. Firebrand trajectories are simulated in velocity and thermal fields generated by the FIRETEC wildfire model. Contiguous fire spread is modeled based on energy conservation and detailed heat transfer mechanisms. Predictions of contiguous fire spread rates are compared to laboratory experiments and prescribed fires.

Wildland Fire, Forest Dynamics, and Their Interactions

by Marc-André Parisien (Editor), Enric Batllori (Editor), Sean A. Parks Carol Miller (Editor) Wildland fire is an important, pervasive, and a sometimes-destructive ecological process in many forest ecosystems across the globe. In some cases, wildland fire maintains and reinforces forest dynamics. This is common, for example, in forests with thick-barked species that are adapted to frequent, low-severity fires or in forests where species’ regenerative traits (e.g., serotiny, resprouting) allow them to endure regimes of recurrent high-severity fire. However, wildland fire can also act as a catalyst that changes the successional trajectory of forest ecosystems, particularly if the factors responsible for historical fire regimes (e.g., frequency, severity, or season) have been substantially altered and exceed species’ adaptive capacity. Examples of these situations include effects of extreme fire weather and drought, fuel buildup due to fire exclusion or insect-induced mortality, and interactions between these factors. Some of these situations may result in fire-induced conversions from forest to non-forest ecosystems.

Wildland Fuel Fundamentals and Applications

2015th Edition

by Robert E. Keane (Author) A new era in wildland fuel sciences is now evolving in such a way that fire scientists and managers need a comprehensive understanding of fuels ecology and science to fully understand fire effects and behavior on diverse ecosystem and landscape characteristics. This is a reference book on wildland fuel science; a book that describes fuels and their application in land management. There has never been a comprehensive book on wildland fuels; most wildland fuel information was put into wildland fire science and management books as separate chapters and sections. This book is the first to highlight wildland fuels and treat them as a natural resource rather than a fire behavior input. Moreover, there has never been a comprehensive description of fuels and their ecology, measurement, and description under one reference; most wildland fuel information is scattered across diverse and unrelated venues from combustion science to fire ecology to carbon dynamics. The literature and data for wildland fuel science has never been synthesized into one reference; most studies were done for diverse and unique objectives. This book is the first to link the disparate fields of ecology, wildland fire, and carbon to describe fuel science. This just deals with the science and ecology of wildland fuels, not fuels management. However, since expensive fuel treatments are being planned in fire dominated landscapes across the world to minimize fire damage to people, property and ecosystems, it is incredibly important that people understand wildland fuels to develop more effective fuel management activities.
