At no other time in American forest history have our forests suffered so much from neglect and lack of good forest stewardship. Although not always intentional, the fact is that forest managers do not have the will or the courage to do what is integral to the natural forestation process—introducing the forests back to fire. Fire has been part of the natural forestation process for thousands of years, that is until man was put in charge of the forests over a hundred years ago. Forest managers will not risk starting a large “prescribed fire” even though they know that this is the right thing to do, but they will spend millions of dollars putting out a catastrophic wildfire. It is time for American citizens to demand that their forests be returned to healthy forests. Fire is one very important management tool to achieving this goal. —Wild Bill
