Fire Flight

Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

A pair of ferocious forest fires rages out of control, threatening to destroy two American national parks and incinerate thousands of homes and park buildings. As the desperate battle to squelch the global warming-induced fires before they "blow up" reaches a fever-pitch, a mysterious string of violent airborne accidents among the air tanker fleet produces a mounting body count. The air tankers - the old aircraft used by pilots to bomb the fires with fire retardant slurry - have been literally falling apart in midair. Clearly not designed for such punishing high-stakes flying, the flying museum pieces should have been grounded years ago. Veteran pilot Clark Maxwell thought his fire bombing days were well behind him. But when Jerry Stein, Maxwell's friend and air tanker fleet-owner, calls at the height of the fire season to beg him to reenter the war, he doesn't hesitate. As the wildfires spread, whipped by massive winds and the federal forces arrayed against the fires reach their limits, hysteria and potential evacuation threatens the local population. In the middle of this crisis, Clark Maxwell becomes convinced that a sinister cover-up is behind the rash of horrific air disasters. As he races to unravel a very real mystery and prevent a natural disaster of massive proportions, Maxwell's probe reaches the upper levels of government agencies charged with mounting the aerial fire fighting effort - a move that for wholly unexpected reasons just may cost him his life.

Fire Ghosts

Hardcover – December 3, 2019

In the summer of 2011, in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, a falling power line sparked a wildfire that burned 158,753 acres of forest. From their home in Santa Fe, thirty air miles southeast, photographers Patricia Galagan and Philip Metcalf watched what came to be known as the Las Conchas fire burn day and night for more than a month. As soon as the roads reopened, they went to the mountains to see the damage this violent fire had wrought. Taking a trail to the rim of Cochiti Canyon, they passed through sections of forest that had burned so hot that nothing remained but blackened trunks and negative spaces where huge tree roots had been. The canyon and the waves of ridges beyond were black with standing dead trees. The visual chaos of the burned forest, at first daunting, pushed them to look harder, to see differently. As they did so, the forest began to look beautiful in its highly altered state. For more than seven years they were compelled to make photographs of the aftermath of the fire to draw people beyond the news-cycle images of smoke and flames into the reality of a forest after an extreme fire. Forest Ghosts is both their ode to the old forest and their gift to help us understand that, in this era of accelerating climate change and increasingly devastating wildfires all over the American West, the new forests will never be the same, but we can still find beauty and enlightenment in the aftermath.

Fire Girl: The Story of one of the First Female CDF Fire Fighters (Volume 1)

Paperback – April 30, 2012

NOTE FROM AUTHORThank you so much for considering my book Fire Girl. I want to let you know that 100% of all of my royalties go to the Wildland Fire Fighter Foundation – This cause financially helps the families of wildland firefighters who die in the line of duty. I was one of the first few female firefighters to work for the California Department of Forestry. The year was 1978 and there were only 26 of us girls working for CDF in the entire state that year. We were still treading on new territory. A female had never stepped foot to work at my assigned Northern California CDF station in its 50 year history! It was definitely a man's world and some weren't happy when an 18 year old girl that stood 5'2" and weighed 95 pounds showed up for duty. From the mundane everyday station work to battling raging forest fires with near death experiences, I tell you my story how I remember it those many years ago with humor and honesty! Yeah, I have a “couple good stories” in there! If you are a firefighter past, present or future, thank you for your invaluable service! If you are a family member of a firefighter, thank you for your support! To see better quality and higher resolution full color photos that appear in the book, go to www.wildlandfirewomen.com There are bonus photos both past and present as well as video!

Fire in Paradise: An American Tragedy

0 Reviews
$12.94

Hardcover – May 5, 2020

The harrowing story of the most destructive American wildfire in a century. There is no precedent in postwar American history for the destruction of the town of Paradise, California. On November 8, 2018, the community of 27,000 people was swallowed by the ferocious Camp Fire, which razed virtually every home and killed at least 85 people. The catastrophe seared the American imagination, taking the front page of every major national newspaper and top billing on the news networks. It displaced tens of thousands of people, yielding a refugee crisis that continues to unfold. Fire in Paradise is a dramatic and moving narrative of the disaster based on hundreds of in-depth interviews with residents, firefighters and police, and scientific experts. Alastair Gee and Dani Anguiano are California-based journalists who have reported on Paradise since the day the fire began. Together they reveal the heroics of the first responders, the miraculous escapes of those who got out of Paradise, and the horrors experienced by those who were trapped. Their accounts are intimate and unforgettable, including the local who left her home on foot as fire approached while her 82-year-old father stayed to battle it; the firefighter who drove into the heart of the inferno in his bulldozer; the police officer who switched on his body camera to record what he thought would be his final moments as the flames closed in; and the mother who, less than 12 hours after giving birth in the local hospital, thought she would die in the chaotic evacuation with her baby in her lap. Gee and Anguiano also explain the science of wildfires, write powerfully about the role of the power company PG&E in the blaze, and describe the poignant efforts to raise Paradise from the ruins. This is the story of a town at the forefront of a devastating global shift―of a remarkable landscape sucked ever drier of moisture and becoming inhospitable even to trees, now dying in their tens of millions and turning to kindling. It is also the story of a lost community, one that epitomized a provincial, affordable kind of Californian existence that is increasingly unattainable. It is, finally, a story of a new kind of fire behavior that firefighters have never witnessed before and barely know how to handle. What happened in Paradise was unprecedented in America. Yet according to climate scientists and fire experts, it will surely happen again.

Kindle Edition

On February 7, 2009, devastating fires ravaged the Australian countryside throughout the State of Victoria. Eight years of consecutive drought coupled with record breaking temperatures caused the fires to burn at an unprecedented rate destroying entire communities and claiming the lives of 173 people. This tragic event would become known as “Black Saturday.” Fire in the Eucalypts is the memoir of a Canadian firefighter working alongside the Australian wildland firefighters during that unforgettable fire season. His journey from training camp to firefighter would ultimately take him directly into the heart of Australia’s worst natural disaster in history.

1st Edition, Kindle Edition

How destructive or beneficial are forest fires to wildlife? Should we be trying to reduce or increase the amount of fire in forests? How are forest fires controlled, and why does this sometimes fail? What effect will climate change have? These and many other questions are answered in this richly illustrated book, written in non-technical language. The journey starts in the long geological history of fire leading up to our present love-hate relationship with it. Exploring the physics of how a single flame burns, the journey continues through how whole forests burn and the anatomy of firestorms. The positive and negative ecological effects of fires are explored, from plants and wildlife to whole landscapes. The journey ends with how fires are controlled, and a look to the future. This book will be of interest to ecologists, biogeographers and anyone with an interest in forest fires and the role they play.

Because tight budgets were the rule during the twenties, Roy Headley took a dim view of most efforts to improve radio communications. Paperback – December 13, 2013

Fire in the Forest is a synopsis of the training, fire incidents, photos and individual chapters on fire events occurring in the early 1970's. Most of the writing involves events which occur on the Tonto, Prescott and Angeles National Forests. In addition there are many individual chapters on various regional histories and personal experiences allowing readers to feel and see what it's like to perform as a fire fighter. Many original photos are included adding to the focus of the book. The writing is not about fire fighting in the large cities but about a different world in the distant, rugged and dangerous world of the immense national forests of the Southwestern United States. All writing springs out of the cultural thinking of any time period. This book reflects the early 1970's and was not a time of being politically correct. I wrote looking back nearly fifty years ago with a 1970's viewpoint.

Gripping and fascinating, this illustrated account explores a previously unstudied yet important aspect of New Zealand’s history: its wildfires. Examining the terrible fires that devastated the country as both Maori and European settlers wrested a livelihood from the land, this book explains the European mentality behind the fires and the resulting vocal arguments against the terrible loss of valuable resources. Based on historical records and oral interviews with employees of the State Forest Service, it also offers a comprehensive look into the approaches and techniques involved in tackling this phenomenon—including the efforts of rural firefighters from the shovel and bucket brigade and those of the firemen and women who form a huge, largely volunteer network

2003rd Edition

Fire is a major agent of disturbance in many biomes of the world but is a particularly important feature of tropical savannas. Up to 50% of the ext- sive tropical savanna landscapes of northern Australia are burnt each year. This includes prestigious conservation reserves such as World Heritage― listed Kakadu National Park, in the Top End of the Northern Territory. As in other savanna regions of the world, the responses of biota to different ?re regimes are poorly understood, such that ?re management represents one of the greatest challenges to conservation managers and researchers alike. This is the context within which a landscape-scale ?re experiment was established at Kapalga Research Station in Kakadu, which aimed to provide a sound scienti?c basis for conservation management in the region. The experiment was established by The Australian Commonwealth Scienti?c and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO),but involved collaborators from a range of universities and government agencies, including the m- agers of Kakadu, the Australian Nature Conservation Agency (ANCA:now Parks Australia North). This book summarizes the ?ndings from the Kapalga ?re experiment and explores the implications for conservation management. We believe that Kapalga has provided important insights into the ?re ecology of tropical savannas and has broad relevance for the conservation management of ?- prone landscapes in general. This book should be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and land management agencies. vii viii Preface We are extremely grateful to all our collaborators, both inside and outside CSIRO, for their involvement in the Kapalga experiment.

Silently watching the raging inferno in the midst of the heat, smoke, and chaos was a man respected as one of California's foremost arson investigators, a captain in the Glendale Fire Department ... From Joseph Wambaugh, the critically acclaimed, nationally bestselling author of The Onion Field, comes the astonishing true story of a nightmarish obsession -- and the hunt for a brilliant psychopath who lived a double life filled with professional tributes and terrifying secrets.

Fire Management in the American West: Forest Politics and the Rise of Megafires

0 Reviews
$59.50

Hardcover – October 1, 2011

Most journalists and academics attribute the rise of wildfires in the western United States to the USDA Forest Service's successful fire-elimination policies of the twentieth century. However, in Fire Management in the American West, Mark Hudson argues that although a century of suppression did indeed increase the hazard of wildfire, the responsibility does not lie with the USFS alone. The roots are found in the Forest Service's relationships with other, more powerful elements of society--the timber industry in particular.

Drawing on correspondence both between and within the Forest Service and the major timber industry associations, newspaper articles, articles from industry outlets, and policy documents from the late 1800s through the present, Hudson shows how the US forest industry, under the constraint of profitability, pushed the USFS away from private industry regulation and toward fire exclusion, eventually changing national forest policy into little more than fire policy. More recently, the USFS has attempted to move beyond the policy of complete fire suppression. Interviews with public land managers in the Pacific Northwest shed light on the sources of the agency's struggles as it attempts to change the way we understand and relate to fire in the West. Fire Management in the American West will be of great interest to environmentalists, sociologists, fire managers, scientists, and academics and students in environmental history and forestry.

Fire Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire

0 Reviews
$17.00

Paperback – Illustrated, June 26, 2012

A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year • A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year “Vivid prose as electrifying as any beach novel you're likely to find this summer.” —San Francisco Chronicle In June 2008 more than two thousand wildfires, all started by a single lightning storm, blazed across the state of California. Tassajara, the oldest Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States, was at particular risk. Set deep in the Ventana wilderness north of Big Sur, the center is connected to the outside world by a single unpaved road. If fire entered the canyon, there would be no way out. Disaster struck during the summer months, when Tassajara opens its doors to visitors, and the grounds fill with guests expecting a restful respite. Instead, the mountain air filled with smoke, and monks broke from regular meditation to conduct fire drills. All visitors were evacuated, and many Zen students followed. A small crew of residents and firefighters remained, preparing to defend Tassajara. But nothing could have prepared them for what came next. When a treacherous shift in weather conditions brought danger nearer still, firefighters made the flash decision to completely evacuate the monastery. As the firefighters and remaining residents caravanned out the long road to Tassajara, five monks turned back, risking their lives to save the monastery. Fire Monks is their story. A gripping narrative as well as an insider’s portrait of the Zen path, Fire Monks reveals what it means to meet an emergency with presence of mind. In tracking the four men and one woman who returned—all novices in fire but experts in readiness—we witness them take their unique experiences facing the fires in their own lives and apply that wisdom to the crisis at hand. Relying on their Zen training, the monks accomplished the seemingly impossible—greeting the fire not as an enemy to defeat, but as a friend to guide. Fire Monks pivots on the kind of moment some seek and some run from, when life and death hang in simultaneous view. Drawing on the strength of community, the practice of paying attention, and the power of an open, flexible mind, the Tassajara monks were able to remain in the moment and act with startling speed and clarity. In studying an event marked by great danger and uncertainty, Fire Monks reveals the bravery that lives within every heart.

Lightning sparks a forest fire deep in the mountains near the town of Waterton. Days later, the sky is blue and the air is clear, so it doesn’t seem like an emergency, until crews of firefighters begin to arrive and townspeople start to prepare. Cricket and her friends watch deer and birds flee the forest and run right through town. But what about the slower animals? What about the porcupines and squirrels, the salamanders and snakes? Cricket searches for a way to help until the fire surprises everyone by quickly switching directions and racing towards the town. She hopes that the preparations and the firefighters' experience will be enough to save her home. But what about all the animals she loves? This is the fifth title in the Cricket McKay series, following Cougar Frenzy, Bats in Trouble, Ospreys in Danger and Salamander Rescue.

Fire Phenomena and the Earth System: An Interdisciplinary Guide to Fire Science

0 Reviews
$111.00

1st Edition, Kindle Edition

Fire plays a key role in Earth system processes. Wildfires influence the carbon cycle and the nutrient balance of our planet, and may even play a role in regulating the oxygen content of our atmosphere. The evolutionary history of plants has been intimately tied to fire and this in part explains the distribution of our ecosystems and their ability to withstand the effects of natural fires today.

Fire Phenomena and the Earth System brings together the various subdisciplines within fire science to provide a synthesis of our understanding of the role of wildfire in the Earth system. The book shows how knowledge of fire phenomena and the nature of combustion of natural fuels can be used to understand modern wildfires, interpret fire events in the geological record and to understand the role of fire in a variety of Earth system processes. By bringing together chapters written by leading international researchers from a range of geological, environmental, chemical and engineering disciplines, the book will stimulate the exchange of ideas and knowledge across these subject areas. Fire Phenomena and the Earth System provides a truly interdisciplinary guide that can inform us about Earth’s past, present and beyond. Readership: Advanced students and researchers across a wide range of earth, environmental and life sciences, including biogeochemistry, paleoclimatology, atmospheric science, palaeontology and paleoecology, combustion science, ecology and forestry.

Fire Raisers, Freaks and Fiends: Obsessive Arsonists in the California Foothills

0 Reviews
$19.95

Paperback – September 18, 2013

An award winning arson investigator brings you over thirty cases from his own files and those of his colleagues. These true case histories cover the entire spectrum of arson crimes from the hapless goof to the most evil and obsessive fiends of them all. Among this collection are the erratic street denizens who are the serial arsonists. This group wanders your streets at night igniting anything that strikes their fancy. A more dangerous and dedicated group is the "mission men" who are trying to set a fire or explosion of cataclysmic proportions, with deadly intentions. The most colorful and odd group in this book has been labeled "whackjobs, weirdos and wannabes". This group consists of phonies masquerading as firefighters, cops, secret agents and others. The chapter on "mad men" shows how much a man's hate will drive him until all rational thought goes out the window. The author, Ed Nordskog has been a police detective for over 23 years and a specialist in arson and bomb investigations for the past 17 years. His beat is the sprawling Los Angeles basin with its over nine million citizens. His case histories in this book are a mere sampling of his 1,700 arson investigations. He has arrested and sat face to face in cramped interview rooms with over 300 arsonists and bombers. Some of these people are also rapists, murderers, gang members, devil worshipers, child molesters, and child murderers. Nordskog's first book, "Torchered Minds-Case histories of notorious serial arsonists", has been widely accepted and lauded in the arson investigation field. This exhaustive study focused on over 60 case histories of the more famous serial arson investigations. Nordskog's current book goes into much more depth to chronicle the various subtypes of the more dangerous arsonists he's come across. He shows obsessive-compulsive stalkers and rapists. He meets and speaks with several dangerous paranoid-schizophrenics who have voices within their heads telling them to burn and kill. He highlights a few suspects who went out on a fiery mission with very little expectation to survive the day, and with the stated goal of taking as many victims with them as possible. He introduces you to people who maim, torture and kill helpless animals and family pets with poison and fire. Lastly, Nordskog introduces true crime readers to the shadowy world of arson investigation and to the investigators themselves. The cases in this book are weirder or more bizarre than can be dreamt up by a Hollywood screenwriter. They are all also 100% true. These cases cover an area from the Los Angeles basin, through the desert region and along the foothills and forests that run up and down the entire state of California. Det. Ed Nordskog has been and arson/bomb investigator, undercover narcotics detective, and a detective working burglaries, robberies, auto theft and other major crimes. He has a Master's Degree and has received over 85 awards for his investigative work to include "Law Enforcement Officer of the Year" and "International Arson Investigator of the Year". He continues to work as an arson/bomb investigator for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. He is an active lecturer and instructor in this field for the State of California, the California Conference of Arson Investigators and the International Association of Arson Investigators.

Fire Science from chemistry to landscape management

0 Reviews
$109.99
This textbook provides students and academics with a conceptual understanding of fire behavior and fire effects on people and ecosystems to support effective integrated fire management. Through case studies, interactive spreadsheets programmed with equations and graphics, and clear explanations, the book provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional readers with a straightforward learning path. The authors draw from years of experience in successfully teaching fundamental concepts and applications, synthesizing cutting-edge science, and applying lessons learned from fire practitioners. We discuss fire as part of environmental and human health. Our process-based, comprehensive, and quantitative approach encompasses combustion and heat transfer, and fire effects on people, plants, soils, and animals in forest, grassland, and woodland ecosystems from around the Earth. Case studies and examples link fundamental concepts to local, landscape, and global fire implications, including social-ecological systems. Globally, fire science and integrated fire management have made major strides in the last few decades. Society faces numerous fire-related challenges, including the increasing occurrence of large fires that threaten people and property, smoke that poses a health hazard, and lengthening fire seasons worldwide. Fires are useful to suppress fires, conserve wildlife and habitat, enhance livestock grazing, manage fuels, and in ecological restoration. Understanding fire science is critical to forecasting the implication of global change for fires and their effects. Increasing the positive effects of fire (fuels reduction, enhanced habitat for many plants and animals, ecosystem services increased) while reducing the negative impacts of fires (loss of human lives, smoke and carbon emissions that threaten health, etc.) is part of making fires good servants rather than bad masters.

Fire Survivor: A Personal Story of the Black Forest fire

Kindle Edition

In June of 2013 my house burned to the ground in the Black Forest Fire in Colorado. Following the fire my youngest child left home for college. Then I went through a rough divorce which left me alone in a new house. Finally I quit my job which got rid of a lot of other problems, but also got rid of my income. I sold pretty much what I had left and moved to a small house in the mountains. This is a brief look at the years that followed the fire and what happened to me during that time. It’s not guidance or life advice or any of that stuff, and maybe none of it applies to you at all, but if you’ve been through a disaster in your life I can perhaps offer you some hope. I managed to climb out of the misery pit and restart my life in a much simpler way. I put my wellbeing first, got healthy again, and started traveling. I’ve never been so stress-free and so happy.
