A Fire Story
Paperback – April 20, 2021
by Brian Fies (Author)
From celebrated author and illustrator Brian Fies comes a firsthand account of the Northern California wildfires of 2017—revised and expanded, and now in paperback
Early morning on Monday, October 9, 2017, wildfires burned through Northern California, resulting in 44 fatalities. In addition, 6,200 homes and 8,900 structures were destroyed. Author Brian Fies’s firsthand account of this tragic event is an honest, unflinching depiction of his personal experiences, including losing his house and every possession he and his wife had that didn’t fit into the back of their car. In the days that followed, as the fires continued to burn through the area, Brian hastily pulled together A Fire Story and posted it online—it immediately went viral. He has now expanded his original webcomic to include environmental insight and the fire stories of his neighbors and others in his community. A Fire Story is a candid testimony of the wildfires that left homes destroyed, families broken, and a community determined to rebuild. The updated and expanded Fire Story is an affordably priced paperback of 192 pages, including 32 pages of all-new material, extending the story past the events of the hardcover edition to include updates on the rebuilding, wrestling with insurance, wrangling with contractors, the management of sometimes volatile emotions, and the threats of yet another wildfire.Paperback – April 20, 2021

Charcoal Forest, the: How Fire Helps Animals and Plants
Paperback – Illustrated, June 15, 2007
by Beth A. Peluso (Author)
After a fire, you might think a burned area is as barren and lifeless as the moon. But take a closer look and you'll find that even before the last wisps of smoke have cleared, the newly burned forest is already teeming with life. Many plants and animals find fertile ground here to grow, eat, and have offspring; some species are dependent on fire and cannot thrive to reproduce without it. Unlike most books, which concentrate on the fire itself, The Charcoal Forest explores the new habitat created by the fire. Focusing on the Northern Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada, the book describes twenty species of animals and plants that contribute to the reclamation and renewal of the charcoal forest. Why do some beetles fly toward a fire? Why will you almost never see a black-backed woodpecker outside of burned areas? How do fires help grow yummy treats like huckleberries and morel mushrooms? Kids and adults will delight in discovering the answers to these and other burning questions-and don't forget to find the black-backed woodpecker in every picture!

Devil In The North Woods: A Novel Based On The 1908 Metz, Michigan, Wildfire
Paperback – May 30, 2005
by Walt Shiel (Author)
What would you do if a wildfire swept through your area without warning? In October 1908, a wildfire swept through northeast Michigan and consumed 900 homes and two million acres of farms and forest. Despite the valiant efforts of the farmers, lumbermen, and shopkeepers, only Lake Huron could quench the flames. With no fire watch towers, spotting aircraft, telephones, or organized firefighting and only limited telegraph, warnings were too few and too late. Devil in the North Woods accurately depicts the fire's genesis, growth, and aftermath. The story's real-life protagonist, 10-year-old Henry Hardies, survived the fire but family did not. Relying on Henry's personal recollections and author Walt Shiel's faithful recreation of time and place, the book vividly brings Henry's ordeal to life. Devil in the North Woods contrasts the terror of nature's destruction with a chronicle of family, love, sorrow, and recovery. The story leaves the reader buoyed by faith in the resilience of the human spirit and belief in love's ability to germinate amid the ashes of ruin. Includes a map and six historical photos.

Paperback – April 30, 2012
by Jan Mendoza (Author)
NOTE FROM AUTHORThank you so much for considering my book Fire Girl. I want to let you know that 100% of all of my royalties go to the Wildland Fire Fighter Foundation – This cause financially helps the families of wildland firefighters who die in the line of duty. I was one of the first few female firefighters to work for the California Department of Forestry. The year was 1978 and there were only 26 of us girls working for CDF in the entire state that year. We were still treading on new territory. A female had never stepped foot to work at my assigned Northern California CDF station in its 50 year history! It was definitely a man's world and some weren't happy when an 18 year old girl that stood 5'2" and weighed 95 pounds showed up for duty. From the mundane everyday station work to battling raging forest fires with near death experiences, I tell you my story how I remember it those many years ago with humor and honesty! Yeah, I have a “couple good stories” in there! If you are a firefighter past, present or future, thank you for your invaluable service! If you are a family member of a firefighter, thank you for your support! To see better quality and higher resolution full color photos that appear in the book, go to www.wildlandfirewomen.com There are bonus photos both past and present as well as video!

Flaming Forest
Paperback – October 21, 2020
by Montgomery M. Atwater (Author), James E. Atwater (Editor)
Flaming Forest is the first in the series of books featuring Hank Winton, which showcase the fire-fighting role of the United States Forest Service. It was written in the terminal years of the Great Depression, shortly before the entry of the United States into World War II.....Set in the time period during which it was written, the Forest Service had just begun experimenting with parachutes as a means of rapid delivery of fire-fighters to remote locations. The term smokejumper had yet to be coined. These were days when supplies to remote facilities deep within the wilderness were packed in by mule-train. Dude was a mildly derogatory term applied to easterners and city folk, meaning greenhorn or tenderfoot. And the average monthly salary for a Dude Wrangler was forty-dollars. ....Yet over the past eighty years, little has changed in the equipment or the methods employed by the ground troops battling on the fire-lines, where the most important tools remain the skill and courage of the men and women who put their bodies on the line for the benefit of us all.
